Shaqlawa — Day Trip from Erbil

Shaqlawa is Kurdistan's most popular mountain escape — a small town perched at 1,000m in the Kurdistan highlands, about 45 minutes from Erbil by car. The drive alone is spectacular, winding up through steep mountain valleys. In summer, when Erbil swelters at 45°C, Shaqlawa is a cool 25–30°C. It's popular with Erbil residents as a weekend escape, and makes an excellent day trip from the city.

🚗Getting to Shaqlawa from Erbil

The easiest and most comfortable way is by taxi or hired car — the journey takes 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic. Agree a return trip price in advance; expect to pay $30–60 USD depending on your negotiation. The road up (Highway 4) is well maintained and the scenery gets better as you climb. Shared minibuses (servis) leave from Erbil's main bus stations for around 5,000–8,000 IQD each way if you want the budget option.

🌄What to do in Shaqlawa

The main draw is the mountain air and scenery. Shaqlawa's old town area has a pleasant market street with fruit stalls, pomegranate sellers (the local speciality), spice shops, and handicrafts. Walking through the surrounding hills is easy and offers spectacular views.

The area around Shaqlawa has several viewpoints and short hiking trails. Nearby Sefeen Mountain has trails for more serious walkers. The drive between Erbil and Shaqlawa passes through Safeen, Harir, and several other highland villages worth a stop on the way.

🍽️Where to eat in Shaqlawa

Shaqlawa has a good selection of restaurants, most with outdoor terraces overlooking the mountains — a very different experience from eating in the city. Kurdish grilled meats (tikka, kebab, dolma) are the speciality. The pomegranates and fresh mountain produce are worth buying from street stalls to take back to Erbil. Most restaurants are open for lunch and dinner.

🗓️Best time to visit Shaqlawa

Spring (March–May) is the most beautiful time — green hills, wildflowers, and pleasant temperatures (15–22°C). Summer (June–August) is the most popular as Shaqlawa offers a cool escape from Erbil's heat, but it gets crowded at weekends. Autumn (September–October) is also excellent — cooler, less crowded, beautiful colours. Winter sees snow on the peaks and a completely different atmosphere, though some restaurants may be closed.
