Erbil Weather — Best Time to Visit

Erbil has a continental semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons — extremely hot summers, mild springs and autumns, and cold winters. The best months for a comfortable outdoor visit are March to May and September to October. Summers are brutal in the open but the city keeps running; winters are manageable but can be cold and occasionally wet. Here's what to expect month by month.

🌸Spring — the best season (March–May)

Spring is the peak time to visit Erbil. March brings Nowruz (Kurdish New Year on 21 March), the most important celebration in the Kurdish calendar, with outdoor festivals, music, and a festive atmosphere across the city. Temperatures are ideal (18–28°C), the surrounding hills and plains are green, and the whole region feels alive. April and May are excellent for day trips to Shaqlawa and the Kurdistan mountains. Expect the occasional rain shower but mostly clear sunny days.

🌞Summer — hot but active (June–August)

Summer in Erbil is intense — temperatures regularly reach 42–46°C in July and August. Outdoor activity during the day is genuinely uncomfortable, but the city doesn't stop. Restaurants, cafés, bars, and malls are busy in the evenings when temperatures drop a little. Summer is actually the peak social season for Erbil's indoor and evening scene.

The mountain resort of Shaqlawa (45 minutes away) is the main escape — 15°C cooler than the city and packed with Erbilis fleeing the heat. If you visit in summer, factor in a Shaqlawa trip and plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening.

🍂Autumn — excellent (September–October)

Autumn is Erbil's second-best season. September can still be warm (30–36°C) but by October temperatures drop to a very comfortable 20–28°C. The city is less crowded than spring and prices are generally lower. October is arguably the most pleasant month in Erbil for outdoor exploring — comfortably warm days and cool evenings. November starts to get cooler and rain becomes more frequent.

❄️Winter (December–February)

Erbil winters are cool to cold with occasional rain and rare snow in the city. Mountain areas like Shaqlawa and Rawanduz see regular snow and have a completely different, dramatic atmosphere in winter. The city is much quieter than spring or summer. If you visit in winter, pack a warm coat — evenings can drop to 2–5°C. The indoor scene (restaurants, cafés, hookah lounges) is just as good year-round.
